“At 17, I decided I wanted to be a full-time athlete but my parents weren't so sure. So we agreed that if I hadn't made it by 21, I'd go back to academia and get a job. Luckily, I quashed their concerns when I won a silver at the 1986 Commonwealth Games when I was 19.”
